What's the threat?
Once ransomware is in your system it lays low, hiding while it encrypts ALL accessible files including documents, images, databases, and every other file it can find. This is not limited to just the computer it initially lands on, but also any shared folder it can find on the network including files residing on servers and NAS devices.

What happens next?
Once it has a foothold and has encrypted your data making it inaccessible to you, it identifies itself, tells you your files are encrypted, and demands payment via bitcoin or some other untraceable payment method in order to send you a code which will decrypt the files.
The payment is usually between 0.5 – 2.5 bitcoins (currently £5,000 – £25,000).
The ‘good’ news is that most ransomware developers do provide a key which will decrypt your files. If news got around that they didn’t, nobody would pay. The ransomware even assures you that this isn’t personal, just business. Little comfort.

Ransomware is usually installed and inadvertently activated by users and therefore the first line of defense is knowledge. Users must be made aware of the dangers of clicking on links within email and on unfamiliar websites.

- Keep your antivirus up to date on ALL PCs. It only needs one weak link in the chain.
